Richard versus the forest… and plains… and mountains…

Nature and I don’t get along very well.

It generally goes like this:

Richard: Hi, Nature! You look very beautiful today.

Nature: I hate you. Die.

Richard: It’s such a lovely day, and you’re in full splendor.

Nature: *chokes Richard*

Richard: *is choked, dies*

I am unfortunately very allergic to most flowering plants, along with animal danders and apparently dust. This means flowers, cats, dogs, and my own apartment are my mortal enemies.

A good dose of antihistamines helps, thankfully, but it only holds off the symptoms. The best way to deal with my allergies is to avoid the allergens as much as possible. This is one of the reasons I don’t go on nature hikes and such, and why I don’t keep pets.

Ironically, I love cats, and used to want one as a pet. But the allergy thing kind of keeps that from happening. I’m not so fond of dogs, though I’m not afraid of them like I used to be.

Eventually I will either get allergy shots, a medicine that will really help will be invented, or I’ll burst into flames. We’ll see which happens first.

I too have menacing allergies, including trees, weeds, many chemicals (most recently my shampoo and conditioner of several years; the detergent on the towels at the gym actually sent me to the hospital several months ago), dust, and cats. However, I still have cats with a tolerable level of reaction. In part this is because I got allergy shots for several years; I understand it’s hit-or-miss with cats and for many people they don’t work, but for me they did–hopefully you’d find the same. Also, while there is no hypo-allergenic cat contrary to popular belief, many people do find they react much less to certain breeds. For someone else I know it was Russian Blues; for me it’s Cornish Rexes. If you love cats it might be worth getting the shots and then spending a little time around different breeds.

If I ever get the fundage to do so, I might look into the shots.

The thing is just I’d rather get the pollen and such shots first, since it affects so much more right now.

But getting a cat would be nice. Someday.

And wow, I thought my allergies were bad, but yours are just as bad, if not worse. My condolences.
